How do we see sound?

An exploration into the connections between our senses

In this era of artificial intelligence and digital immersion, experiences have vast potential to become deeply (multi)sensorial. Understanding our abstract senses will be even more important, so we built a survey to explore the relationship between what we hear, what we see and the words we choose to describe it.

Lots of research has already interrogated this topic. Studies into The role of iconicity in the origins of language, the Kiki-Bouba effect, embodied cognition and audio-visual simultaneity were all been our inspiration. We won’t pretend this survey is scientific – we’re a little team of designers, composers and strategists, curious to understand more about how people feel about what we do, so we can do it better.

We used AI image generation to build the visual material for the survey, whilst collaborating with sound designer Joe Sheldrick for the audio snippets.
